Position Summary

The Medical Planner is responsible for leading the planning and programming of healthcare facilities from project inception through design. This role serves as the primary liaison between clinical stakeholders, project teams, and design disciplines to ensure healthcare environments are functional, efficient, compliant, and aligned with operational goals. The Medical Planner applies expertise in clinical workflows, evidence-based design, healthcare regulations, and space planning to develop innovative solutions that support exceptional patient care and staff efficiency.

Working collaboratively with architects, engineers, interior designers, construction professionals, and client representatives, the Medical Planner translates clinical and operational requirements into design concepts that support long-term organizational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Planning & Programming

  • Lead healthcare planning and programming efforts for projects of varying size and complexity.
  • Conduct stakeholder interviews, workshops, and user group meetings to gather operational and functional requirements.
  • Analyze existing clinical operations, patient flow, staff workflow, and departmental adjacencies.
  • Develop space programs, functional diagrams, blocking and stacking studies, and departmental layouts.
  • Prepare planning documentation, design narratives, and presentation materials.

Design Integration

  • Collaborate with architectural and engineering teams throughout schematic design, design development, and construction documentation.
  • Ensure clinical functionality and operational efficiency are maintained throughout the design process.
  • Review drawings and specifications for compliance with healthcare planning objectives.

Project Management

  • Support project managers in maintaining schedules, deliverables, and client communications.
  • Manage planning tasks across multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Prepare meeting agendas, facilitate planning sessions, and document decisions.
  • Assist in project budgeting and scope development related to planning services.

Regulatory & Technical Knowledge

  • Maintain knowledge of applicable healthcare codes, standards, and guidelines.
  • Coordinate planning decisions with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
  • Participate in code reviews and compliance discussions with project teams.

Business Development

  • Support proposal development and interview presentations.
  • Participate in client relationship development and strategic planning discussions.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5–10 years of experience in healthcare planning, medical planning, healthcare architecture, or related clinical planning.
  • Experience with hospitals, ambulatory care, specialty clinics, outpatient facilities, academic medical centers, or medical office buildings.
  • Experience facilitating user group meetings and programming sessions
