The firm specializes in Life Sciences and Pharmaceutical facilities, designing highly technical environments that support research, healthcare, and the advancement of science. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience planning and designing laboratory environments and enjoy working directly with clients and users to develop thoughtful, technically sound solutions.

The Opportunity

This role will lead project efforts focused on the programming, planning, and design of laboratory facilities, working within a multidisciplinary team of architects, engineers, and other technical professionals.

The position offers the opportunity to be involved throughout the project lifecycle—from early programming and conceptual planning through design development and construction documentation—while developing strong relationships with clients and project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead programming, planning, and design efforts for laboratory-focused projects.

  • Meet directly with clients and user groups to understand project needs and translate those requirements into effective project programs.

  • Lead programming and concept-planning meetings and help develop design solutions.

  • Develop conceptual design ideas and 2D/3D presentation materials.

  • Take projects from conceptual design through construction documentation, coordinating closely with other disciplines.

  • Research and select laboratory-specific architectural components, including furniture, equipment, finishes, and related building elements.

  • Oversee construction drawings and specifications while incorporating client requirements, regulatory standards, and industry best practices.

  • Apply knowledge of laboratory-specific codes and NIH design guidelines/best practices to project planning and design.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to ensure successful project delivery.

  • Mentor and support junior staff and contribute to their professional development.

  • Participate in industry events and stay current with evolving laboratory planning and architectural design best practices.

  • Travel periodically for client meetings and project execution.

Project & Market Focus

The firm's work is concentrated within the Life Sciences and Pharmaceutical sectors, with a particular emphasis on technically complex laboratory environments.

Projects involve the programming, planning, and architectural design of laboratory spaces, requiring an understanding of laboratory-specific codes, equipment, furniture, finishes, regulatory requirements, and specialized design guidelines.

Ideal Background

  • 7+ years of experience working on laboratory spaces in a Project Architect and/or Lab Planner capacity.

  • Strong experience with laboratory programming, planning, and design.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead design programming and planning meetings with clients and users.

  • Knowledge of lab-specific codes, equipment, furniture, finishes, and NIH guidelines/best practices.

  • Experience delivering architectural projects from concept through completion.

  • Strong client-facing, presentation, and communication skills.

  • Proficiency with Revit and Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Architectural registration or progress toward licensure is preferred.
