Mid-Level Instrumentation and Controls Engineer

Ref: 300974

A global environmental engineering consultancy is expanding and is looking for a Mid-Level Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to join a high-performing team delivering some of the most technically interesting water and wastewater projects in the market.

This is a business that operates at the front end of smart infrastructure. They design the systems that make treatment plants intelligent, resilient, and future-ready. Their projects are high profile, long term, and genuinely meaningful, protecting communities, supporting sustainability, and shaping how cities manage critical resources. Despite their international reach, the culture remains close-knit, supportive, and strongly focused on individual growth.

If you are someone who enjoys owning technical challenges, influencing design direction, and seeing complex systems come to life on site, this role offers real scope, visibility, and progression.

You will play a central role in the delivery of instrumentation and controls packages on medium to large projects. From early concept through to construction and commissioning, you will be trusted to lead design, guide clients, and drive technical quality.

You will be heavily involved in:

  • Leading I and C design teams on major water and wastewater schemes

  • Designing PLC, SCADA, and industrial communication networks

  • Developing P&IDs, control philosophies, HMI concepts, and system architectures

  • Selecting instrumentation and producing high-quality specifications and data sheets

  • Designing control panels, telemetry systems, and fiber and radio networks

  • Managing scope, schedule, budget, and technical risk within the I and C discipline

  • Mentoring engineers and coordinating designers and technicians

  • Working directly with clients in technical workshops and design reviews

  • Supporting construction, commissioning, and operational handover

This is a role where your technical judgement matters and where your ideas will influence how facilities are built and operated.

What makes this exciting

  • Access to complex, large-scale projects rather than repetitive small jobs

  • A genuine technical career path with exposure to senior engineers and decision-makers

  • A business that invests in tools, training, and professional development

  • A collaborative culture where good ideas are encouraged and expertise is recognised

  • The chance to work on infrastructure that directly benefits communities and the environment

What they are looking for

  • Degree qualified in Electrical, Instrumentation and Control, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering

  • Around 6 to 12 years’ experience in instrumentation, controls, and industrial automation environments

  • Strong background in PLC/SCADA design, control systems, and I and C documentation

  • Professional Engineer registration

  • Confidence leading technical packages and engaging directly with clients

A master’s degree is beneficial but not essential.
