Automation Engineer - Instrumentation & Controls

Location: Fairfax, VA



A leading employee-owned engineering and consulting firm is seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to join their Fairfax office. This is a key technical role focused on the design, implementation, and commissioning of advanced instrumentation and control systems across a variety of infrastructure and industrial projects.



You'll play a central role in delivering high-quality automation solutions, mentoring junior staff, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams from concept through commissioning.



What You'll Be Doing:

Develop instrumentation and control system designs, including control diagrams and system architecture layouts.
Provide technical direction to junior staff and oversee the preparation of design documentation using modern drafting tools.
Translate client goals into technical requirements and support the development of design reports and specifications.
Review shop drawings, respond to contractor inquiries, and participate in system testing and inspections.
Design and configure automation systems including HMI/SCADA platforms, PLCs, industrial networks, and data collection tools.
Create network architecture diagrams for Ethernet-based control systems, including integration with field devices and monitoring equipment.
Lead field testing and system startup activities, ensuring documentation and quality standards are met.
Prepare operations manuals and develop training programs for system users at all organizational levels.
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development through technical reviews and knowledge sharing.


What We're Looking For:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Control Systems Engineering (or related field)
8-15+ years of experience in automation, instrumentation, or control systems engineering
Experience developing Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
Experience water / wastewater projects
Proficiency with SCADA, PLCs, HMI software, and industrial networking
Experience in infrastructure, utilities, or industrial automation projects
Strong communication and leadership skills
PE license or ability to obtain
