International Data Centre Day: Insights from the experts powering digital infrastructure

International Data Centre Day is a good moment to take a step back and look at how quickly the market is evolving.

With AI demand accelerating, power constraints becoming more visible, and new infrastructure being built at pace, it’s clear the data centre space is moving faster than ever.

We asked a few members of our Data Centre team for their perspective on what they’re seeing in the market right now, from key trends to the challenges businesses are facing, and what’s ahead.

What is the biggest trend shaping the data centre market right now?

Charlie Sykes, Mission Critical Lead Consultant:

"One of the biggest trends right now is the rapid growth of AI and high-performance computing. It’s driving a huge increase in demand for data centres, but also changing how they’re designed, especially in terms of power density and cooling. We’re seeing a shift towards more energy-efficient infrastructure and even new cooling methods like liquid cooling to handle the heat from AI workloads. Sustainability is also becoming a major focus, with operators under pressure to reduce energy use and carbon impact while still scaling quickly."

What challenges are companies facing when building or scaling data centres?

Olivia Hewitt, Recruitment Consultant:

"Power availability and grid constraints are among the biggest challenges, particularly in key European hubs such as Frankfurt and Amsterdam. On top of that, planning permissions, sustainability requirements, and supply chain delays are all adding complexity and extending project timelines. Access to suitable land and skilled labour is also becoming increasingly competitive."

What excites you most about the future of the data centre industry?

Swedha Rajaram, Recruitment Consultant, Data Center Development:

"What excites me most is how much opportunity there is for innovation and growth, especially with AI accelerating everything. We’re still in the early stages, and the scale of what’s being built over the next 5–10 years is massive. It’s a space where you can genuinely build something from the ground up and have a real impact. There’s a rare opportunity to shape how the next decade of technology actually functions, from AI to global connectivity, all happening at an unprecedented pace."

What this means for data centre talent and hiring demand

The pace of growth across the data centre market is putting real pressure on talent. From engineering and construction through to operations and commissioning, demand is outpacing supply, particularly in key hubs where power and project timelines are already constrained. For businesses, securing the right people is becoming just as critical as securing land or energy. For candidates, it’s a market full of opportunity, with clear progression and the chance to be part of projects shaping the future of global infrastructure.

At Harper Harrison, we work closely with organisations across the data centre space, building long-standing, in-person relationships that give us a genuine understanding of their projects, teams, and hiring needs. We’re seeing this demand first-hand, and we’re also currently hiring within our own team.
