A nationally recognized commercial builder is seeking a Director of Risk and General Counsel to oversee legal operations and enterprise risk management strategy. This individual will act as a strategic partner to the executive leadership team, guiding the company through contract negotiations, dispute resolution, claims, compliance, and insurance matters. The position combines high-level legal expertise with deep operational insight into construction risk.
Responsibilities:
Lead the company's risk management and legal strategy across all construction operations
Review and negotiate contracts, joint ventures, and design-build agreements
Provide counsel on insurance programs, claims resolution, and subcontractor default mitigation
Serve as liaison to external counsel, insurers, and sureties
Partner with operations teams on change orders, disputes, and claims prevention
Develop and enforce internal policies for compliance and regulatory matters
Assist in managing builder's risk and subcontractor insurance programs
Advise on corporate governance, M&A activity, and employment law issues
Qualifications:
J.D. and active license to practice law in the U.S. (Missouri preferred)
10-15+ years of legal experience, with at least 5 in construction or real estate
Deep knowledge of risk management, insurance programs, contracts, and claims
Experience supporting complex, multi-state commercial construction projects
Strong leadership presence and ability to influence cross-functional teams
Experience working with executive leadership and board members

Compensation & Benefits:
$250,000-$300,000 base salary + executive incentive bonus
