Director of Risk & General Counsel

A nationally recognized commercial builder is seeking a Director of Risk and General Counsel to oversee legal operations and enterprise risk management strategy. This individual will act as a strategic partner to the executive leadership team, guiding the company through contract negotiations, dispute resolution, claims, compliance, and insurance matters. The position combines high-level legal expertise with deep operational insight into construction risk.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the company's risk management and legal strategy across all construction operations

  • Review and negotiate contracts, joint ventures, and design-build agreements

  • Provide counsel on insurance programs, claims resolution, and subcontractor default mitigation

  • Serve as liaison to external counsel, insurers, and sureties

  • Partner with operations teams on change orders, disputes, and claims prevention

  • Develop and enforce internal policies for compliance and regulatory matters

  • Assist in managing builder's risk and subcontractor insurance programs

  • Advise on corporate governance, M&A activity, and employment law issues

Qualifications:

  • J.D. and active license to practice law in the U.S. (Missouri preferred)

  • 10-15+ years of legal experience, with at least 5 in construction or real estate

  • Deep knowledge of risk management, insurance programs, contracts, and claims

  • Experience supporting complex, multi-state commercial construction projects

  • Strong leadership presence and ability to influence cross-functional teams

  • Experience working with executive leadership and board members

Compensation & Benefits:
