System Architects AC/DC North Carolina, United States
Systems Architect
AC / DC Power Systems | Distributed Energy | AI Infrastructure
Location: North Carolina
Harper Harrison has partnered with one of the most exciting emerging technology companies in the electrical infrastructure market.
As AI, hyperscale computing, and industrial electrification continue to drive unprecedented demand for power, the industry is facing a fundamental challenge: the electrical grid was never designed for the speed, flexibility, or capacity these applications now require.
Our client has developed a breakthrough power conversion platform that rethinks how electrical systems are designed. Rather than relying on conventional transformer architectures and multiple stages of power conversion, their technology enables utility power, battery energy storage, renewable generation, generators, and both AC and DC loads to operate through a single intelligent platform.
The result is faster deployment, lower infrastructure costs, improved efficiency, and a significantly more flexible electrical architecture capable of supporting the next generation of AI data centers, microgrids, industrial facilities, and distributed energy systems.
Following substantial customer growth across North America, the business is expanding its Solutions Engineering organization and is seeking experienced Systems Architects to help customers design the future of electrical infrastructure.
You will become the technical authority throughout the customer engagement process, working directly with developers, EPC contractors, utilities, consulting engineers, hyperscale operators, and industrial customers to design complete electrical solutions around a next-generation power platform.
Rather than designing individual pieces of equipment, you'll architect entire electrical ecosystems.
You'll evaluate how power flows from the utility through medium voltage distribution, battery storage, renewable generation, backup generation, and mission critical loads before developing an optimized system architecture that delivers resilience, flexibility, efficiency, and future scalability.
Working alongside Business Development, Product Engineering, Controls Engineering, and Manufacturing, you'll bridge the gap between customer requirements and technical execution, helping shape solutions that fundamentally change how power infrastructure is deployed.
Key responsibilities include:
* Develop complete AC and DC power system architectures for AI data centers, microgrids, industrial facilities, and distributed energy applications.
* Work directly with customers to understand technical requirements and develop optimized electrical solutions.
* Design and review one-line diagrams, conceptual electrical layouts, and system architectures.
* Define the integration strategy for utility power, battery energy storage systems (BESS), renewable energy, backup generation, and critical loads.
* Provide technical leadership throughout the sales and project development lifecycle.
* Present technical solutions to customers, consulting engineers, utilities, EPC contractors, and executive stakeholders.
* Collaborate with Product Management and Engineering to influence future product development and technology roadmaps.
* Support equipment selection, system sizing, and technical proposal development.
* Evaluate system performance, reliability, resiliency, and operational flexibility.
* Act as the technical authority during customer workshops, design reviews, and solution presentations.
* Stay current with emerging technologies across distributed energy, power electronics, grid modernization, and mission critical infrastructure.
Experience Required
The successful candidate will possess a strong background in electrical power systems and experience designing complex infrastructure projects involving multiple power sources and loads.
Candidates should ideally have:
* Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
* 8+ years of experience designing electrical power systems or integrated energy solutions.
* Experience developing AC and DC electrical architectures for medium and low voltage applications.
* Strong understanding of distributed energy resources (DER), battery energy storage systems (BESS), renewable generation, and utility interconnections.
* Experience working with mission critical infrastructure, industrial power systems, data centers, or microgrids.
* Knowledge of electrical protection, power distribution, fault current analysis, and system resiliency.
* Experience producing one-line diagrams and conceptual electrical designs.
* Customer-facing experience supporting technical sales, applications engineering, consulting engineering, or solution development.
* Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both engineering and commercial audiences.
Preferred Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be highly advantageous:
* AI or hyperscale data center infrastructure
* Solid-state power conversion or power electronics
* Microgrid design and controls
* Medium Voltage (MV) distribution systems
* Energy management systems (EMS)
* Utility-scale renewable energy
* Critical power systems
* ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, PSCAD, or similar power system modelling software
* Professional Engineer (PE) registration
Ideal Backgrounds
We are particularly interested in speaking with professionals from:
* Power Systems Engineering
* Solutions Architecture
* Applications Engineering
* Electrical Consulting
* Distributed Energy
* Critical Power
* Utility Engineering
* Microgrids
* Power Electronics
* Mission Critical Infrastructure
This opportunity is ideal for engineers who enjoy solving complex technical challenges, working directly with customers, and helping shape the future of electrical infrastructure across AI, data centers, and distributed energy markets.
