Principal – Healthcare Architecture

Location: Chantilly, VA or Fort Worth, TX

Position Overview

A nationally established architecture and design organization is seeking an experienced Healthcare Principal to join its leadership team and play a key role in the continued growth of its healthcare practice.

This is a senior leadership opportunity for an accomplished healthcare architect who brings a combination of client leadership, project delivery expertise, technical credibility, team development, and business development experience.

The Principal will serve as a trusted advisor to healthcare clients while helping shape the strategic direction and growth of the practice. The successful individual will have the opportunity to leverage an established national platform while taking meaningful ownership over client relationships, market development, project performance, and the development of future leaders within the organization.

This position can be based in Chantilly, Virginia / the Washington, DC metropolitan area or Fort Worth, Texas.

Key Responsibilities

Healthcare Practice & Project Leadership

  • Provide senior leadership across complex healthcare architecture projects, ensuring a high standard of design, technical execution, and client service.

  • Lead multidisciplinary teams through all phases of project delivery, from early planning and design through documentation and construction administration.

  • Serve as an executive-level client advisor, developing a deep understanding of healthcare organizations, their facilities, operational needs, and long-term capital priorities.

  • Oversee project performance, including schedule, budget, staffing, quality, profitability, and overall client satisfaction.

  • Provide strategic guidance around healthcare planning, programming, design, and project delivery.

  • Build, mentor, and develop high-performing teams while creating opportunities for emerging leaders within the practice.

  • Partner with other senior leaders across the organization to share expertise, resources, and relationships across markets and geographies.

Business Development & Market Growth

  • Develop and execute strategies to expand the firm's presence within the healthcare market.

  • Build upon existing client relationships while identifying and developing new healthcare clients and opportunities.

  • Maintain strong relationships with healthcare executives, facilities leaders, administrators, consultants, and other key industry stakeholders.

  • Lead and participate in RFQs, RFPs, pursuits, interviews, presentations, and direct-award opportunities.

  • Work closely with marketing and practice leadership to develop compelling pursuit strategies, proposals, and client presentations.

  • Represent the organization at healthcare industry conferences, professional organizations, networking events, and other market-facing activities.

  • Track market activity, relationships, pipeline, and business development performance.

  • Contribute to broader strategic planning around practice growth, profitability, talent, and long-term market positioning.

Qualifications

  • Professional degree from an accredited Architecture program.

  • Architectural licensure required, with the ability to obtain reciprocal licensure where necessary.

  • 15+ years of architecture experience, including significant leadership experience within healthcare architecture.

  • Ideally 10+ years of direct healthcare architecture experience.

  • Demonstrated success leading large, complex healthcare projects and multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Strong understanding of healthcare planning, programming, design, technical delivery, and construction.

  • Proven ability to develop trusted relationships with senior healthcare clients and decision-makers.

  • Experience contributing to or directly leading business development, client development, and pursuit strategy.

  • Strong commercial and financial understanding of architectural practice and project performance.

  • Ability to operate effectively at both a strategic and executional level.

  • Collaborative leadership style with a strong track record of mentoring and developing teams.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, relationship-building, and public-speaking skills.

The position can be based in:

  • Chantilly, VA

Regular engagement with clients and project teams will be expected, with regional travel required as appropriate.
