 Somerville, NJ

Overview

An established Architecture and Engineering firm is looking to add a Project Mechanical Engineer to support a growing pipeline of commercial, municipal, and industrial projects. This is an opportunity to join a collaborative, tight-knit team where engineers have direct visibility with leadership and play a key role in shaping both project delivery and technical direction.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys owning projects end-to-end and wants to step into a role with greater autonomy, influence, and long-term growth potential.

The Role
You will take ownership of mechanical design across the full project lifecycle, from early concept through construction administration. This is a hands-on role requiring both strong technical execution and the ability to lead coordination efforts internally and externally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC systems including heating, cooling, ventilation, and exhaust
  • Design plumbing systems including domestic water, sanitary, and storm systems
  • Perform load calculations, equipment sizing, and system layout for ductwork and piping
  • Develop construction documents including drawings, specifications, and equipment schedules
  • Select mechanical equipment such as air handling units, RTUs, boilers, chillers, heat pumps, and related systems
  • Conduct code reviews and ensure compliance with applicable building and energy codes
  • Coordinate with clients, architects, contractors, and utility providers throughout project delivery
  • Support permitting efforts and interface with local authorities and building departments
  • Participate in site visits, construction meetings, and review of shop drawings
  • Guide and mentor junior engineers, providing technical oversight and quality control

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in mechanical design
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Strong experience designing HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial, municipal, or industrial projects
  • Ability to independently manage design efforts and drive projects forward
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards including IMC, IPC, IBC, ASHRAE, and energy codes
  • Experience producing construction documents and coordinating across disciplines
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment

What Sets This Opportunity Apart

  • Smaller firm environment with direct access to leadership and decision-making
  • Opportunity to take true ownership of projects rather than working in a siloed role
  • Exposure across multiple project types including both renovation and ground-up work
  • Clear path for growth into a technical leadership position
  • Hybrid work environment offering flexibility
