Celebrating Women in Engineering and the Built Environment

The built environment industry, spanning engineering, architecture, and construction, has long been perceived as male-dominated. But as the sector evolves to meet new sustainability, infrastructure, and technological demands, so does the landscape of opportunity for women. Increasingly, female professionals are making their mark, driving innovation, and helping shape a more inclusive future.

Why gender diversity matters in engineering

Workplace diversity leads to stronger teams, better ideas, and more resilient outcomes. In engineering, where decisions directly impact how we live, move, and interact with the world, diverse perspectives are crucial to building spaces and systems that work for everyone.

In the U.S., women’s participation in construction has grown from 12.5% in 2016 to 14.3% in the past year. While encouraging, these figures show how much work is still needed to close the gender gap in technical fields like engineering. Inclusive hiring practices, clear pathways for progression, and greater visibility remain critical to driving long-term change.

Spotlight on women at Harper Harrison

Earlier this year, for International Women’s Day, we spoke with Vanessa Eatz, Principal Consultant in Architecture & Design at Harper Harrison in New York, about gender diversity across the built environment. Her insights remain just as relevant as we mark International Women in Engineering Day, highlighting the ongoing need for visibility, representation, and opportunity.

“There are more women in architecture degree programs and on the path to licensure now than ever before,” she notes, a trend that reflects steady progress. But it’s not just about numbers. “When women see others thriving in leadership roles, it fosters confidence and ambition.” Representation matters. When women are visible at every level, from entry-level to leadership, it reinforces the message that there is space to grow and lead.

The future of women in engineering and the built environment

Engineering shapes the future, and that future depends on the inclusion of every voice. At Harper Harrison, we’re committed to building a more inclusive sector by championing diverse talent and connecting professionals with the companies ready to back them. As we celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, we continue our mission to support a new generation of engineers, one that reflects the world we’re building for.
