About the Role

This position sits within the firm's Architecture and Interiors discipline and takes a leadership role with clients during the earliest phases of project development. The Lab Planner is responsible for translating technical requirements into innovative spatial strategies, working closely with clients, architects, engineers, and project stakeholders to ensure the design meets both operational goals and the broader project vision.

The successful candidate will manage mid to large-scale projects-often with complex or undefined objectives-supervising team members and delivering solutions that align with the client's programmatic needs and the firm's standards for design excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead programming and planning efforts for new construction and renovation projects in science, technology, and laboratory environments.

  • Collaborate with project managers, architects, and engineers to develop design solutions that balance function, aesthetics, and long-term flexibility.

  • Translate complex technical requirements into clear, actionable plans and diagrams.

  • Mentor and supervise internal teams, supporting junior staff and fostering professional growth.

  • Research and integrate current trends and best practices in laboratory design.

  • Contribute to business development efforts by preparing project-specific content, participating in client interviews, and developing strategic marketing materials.

  • Author detailed narrative reports addressing space utilization, functional adjacencies, and expansion strategies.

  • Provide subject-matter expertise during schematic design, design development, and construction documentation.

  • Support construction administration by ensuring alignment with programmatic intent and providing guidance as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Interior Design required.

  • Registered professional (RA or NCIDQ) preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in lab planning, programming, and design.

  • Strong knowledge of laboratory workflows, equipment needs, and space planning strategies.

  • Excellent hand-drawing, sketching, and visual communication skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and 3D modeling tools such as SketchUp, Rhino, or similar.
